I won this commission to design the poster of Ouachita
Baptist University's production of the Secret
Garden while attending school there. Generally, one of the
professor's at the school handled all of these projects, but he
was planning a sabbatical, and the gave the opportunity to his students.
It was during this project that I first learned what it meant to
be a graphic designer.
I had never done commissioned work
(or at least not work for a client, as I received no commission
for this design,) and wasn't prepared for the amount of collaboration
that is required when a designer begins working for someone else.
I was quite pleased with my first concept, and spent quite awhile
on it, so I was pretty upset when the director
of the play asked me to redo it
(I'm trying to be as polite as possible here...) It took me about
two months and a lot of caffiene
to come up with the design you see to the left, and barely completed
in time for the show. Needless to say, I learned the value of communication,
and I learned what it meant to please your clients. So, aspiring
artists beware - the graphic design industry is a humbling
one.
For the sake of tending to my own wounded ego,
I've also included here another of my early designs, patterned after
vintage, turn-of-the-century French adverisements (such as those
of Henri Toulouse-Loutrec, though
he predated those mentioned.)
