First Steps to Fixing Connection & Dial-up Problems

Before moving to connection troubleshooter, use these steps to make sure you aren't having a physical setback.

  1. Shut down your computer completely (with Windows 98, click on » Shut Down... » Shut down)

  2. Make sure your phone line is securely plugged into the wall jack and firmly connected into the Line slot on your modem

  3. If your phone cord is longer than 10 feet, we recommend a 6' to 10' wire (or smaller) to optimize your connection speed

  4. If your phone cord is routed through a surge protector and/or phone line splitter, remove them to make a direct connection from the wall to your computer system

  5. Turn on your computer system

  6. Attempt to Dial into IOCC.com as you usually would

  7. If this did not help your situation, write down the error message or problem and advance to troubleshoot in Common Connection & Dial-up Problems
